Kevin Loveless stood in the midst of the dry, barren wasteland that is White Sands, New Mexico. When the bus that brought him there pulled away, he was struck with awe at the vision beyond it.

“We saw the future right there in front us,” He said.

Loveless stood with a group of fellow Accredited Space Agents (ASA’s) gathered from around the world as they got their first in-person glimpse of Spaceport America, the first-ever civilian spaceport being built by the citizens of New Mexico. Dona Ana and Sierra County Voters approved a million spaceport tax in 2008, funding the project and making the state not only a bookmark in space industry history but, now, a launch point for the future.

“It looked like a giant mushroom, but you hardly knew it was there because they’ve built it into the environment,” Loveless said. “It just looked like it belonged there.”

President of Global Travel in Boise, Loveless recently returned from his second ASA forum at Spaceport America, an event designed to familiarize agents with the facilities, as well as New Mexico and its rich, and sometimes surprising, industry history. The forum, held October 4 through 8, included stops at the National Solar Observatory and the New Mexico Museum of Space History.

Loveless is one of 75 ASA’s in the America’s and Australia, and one of 128 in 33 countries worldwide authorized by Virgin Galactic to sell vacation packages to future civilian astronauts.

There are fewer than 500 people who have been to space, but Virgin Galactic plans on increasing those numbers beginning next year, when it sends the first private spacecraft, SpaceShip Two, (a.k.a. VSS Enterprise) beyond the mesosphere into the lower thermosphere. It will carry two pilots and six private citizens, giving them the unique opportunity to see Earth from 62 miles, or 327,360 feet above sea level. The company, which also publishes a magazine under the same name, has exclusive rights to sell Virgin Galactic space travel in the Americas, extending those rights to member agents.

Prospective agents must attend training with Virgin Galactic, giving them expert knowledge in guiding prospective space customers.

From Dream to RealityDinosaurs and rockets were all the rage when he was growing up. Like millions the world over, Loveless, his imagination stimulated by the space race of the 1960′s, dreamed of one day traveling man’s final frontier.

He imagined a craft, similar to the U.S. space shuttle, taking hundreds of passengers beyond Earth’s atmosphere. It’s something he has been waiting over four decades to see.

“I was around for the space race,” he said. “That’s why I read the newspaper and watched television. I waited to see Walter Cronkite talk about rockets, in that voice of his, ‘Today America sent another rocket into space . . .’ It was exciting, and very ‘American.’”

But Loveless said what is happening today is not just an “American” thing, rather a shared experience.

“It’s nice to see that this is more of a joint effort,” he explained. “It’s something that can unite us, helping each other to go above the atmosphere. We are sharing the technology, the experience; that’s what tourism is all about. I imagine, when you get up there, you can’t see any borders. We are all on the Earth together. From everything you hear, people react to it in different ways, but some come back with a very different perspective of what it means to live on this Earth.”

Loveless left Spaceport America just days before Virgin Galactic’s October 11 SpaceShip Two glide test, performed 45,000 feet above the Mojave desert, home of the Mojave Air and Spaceport in California. It’s one of several more tests that need to be performed before the spacecraft takes its first load of paying customers to space.

The ages of the 370 who have already purchased tickets range from 18- to 83-years-old. Once customers put down their 10 percent deposit, they receive a welcome pack with special insider updates, including invitations to events with fellow astronauts.

All astronauts take part in a three-day training program at Spaceport America, receive a Phillippe Starck-designed space suit, undergo G-force and weightlessness training, pre-flight training and are briefed on their suborbital mission. Customers are given the opportunity to charter the world’s first commercial spacecraft with family, friends or co-workers.

When SpaceShip Two is ready to go, it will catch a ride under the wing of WhiteKnight Two. The spacecraft releases from its carrier craft after reaching 45,000 feet and, by power of its hybrid rocket engine, accelerates into a vertical climb, reaching speeds as high as Mach 4.

Astronauts will enjoy four to five minutes of zero gravity before returning to Earth, experiencing the force of six G’s before gliding safely back to Spaceport America’s two-mile long runway.

“It’s hard to tell if the price will come down in the future,” Loveless said, of the 0,000 cost that all but prices most people out of the opportunity. “It depends on whether competitors are able to bring something to the table. It is a business and there is potential to take it to other places, like space hotels. They can do all sorts of things.”

Virgin Galactic, however, is not the only company who wants to send people to space. Aircraft manufacturing giant Boeing is the latest to enter the space tourism ring, vying for position in an emerging industry that also includes companies like Armadillo Aerospace and Xcor Aerospace. According to SPACE.com, Virginia-based Space Adventures will market passenger seats aboard commercial flights of Boeing’s Crew Space Transportation-100 spacecraft. The craft is being designed to travel to the International Space Station and future private space stations.

Structure And The Novel–The First 50 Pages

We talked before about a novel’s opening line, and how important getting it just right is.
So, now let’s say you’ve written that bang up first line, and now let’s focus on the rest of the book’s beginning–the first fifty pages.

Isn’t that just the hardest part? I hear from so many writers struggling with where to start, how much to convey up front, and how active page one needs to be, etc., etc. And the answers vary–a lot. Depending upon in what genre you’re writing, for one thing. A Thriller must begin very differently from a Western or Category Romance or even a Cozy Mystery. But as far as novel development is concerned, the inherent factors remain the same.

The best way to begin a novel is just to begin it. In other words, quit obsessing and write. If you’re serious about the process, no one will ever see the first draft anyway. And even if you’re of the sort who specifically outlines from alpha to omega, much will change once you get to that initial “The End.” At which point, you’ll always go into revisions by rewriting the beginning. Often, many times.

All right, so the original creation process is finished, and you’re into revisions–the actual book editing. What do you want to accomplish with your opening? HOW you do this, again, will vary by genre. But WHAT you want to get done in the beginning crosses them all.

By far the biggest glitch I see is that the novel really begins about fifty pages in. Writers, especially before finding their sea legs (no matter how long they’ve been at it–learning to write is not a matter of time so much as it is of willingness, dedication, and application), ramble along for a good way before finding the track of their stories. Even seasoned writers do this, especially those who write from “discovery”–not knowing exactly how to get where they’re going until it opens before them. The difference is, professionals then go back to cut and begin again, and aren’t afraid of killing their own words to do so. Your editing arm will learn to point out where the pacing lags, or how much ancillary material needs slicing because much of that was necessary for you, the writer, to know, but not for the reader. Remember: Your reader is trusting you to convey to him ONLY those things that pertain to these specific characters in this specific story. The rest is just background material for you, the book author (and is merely noise for the reader).

The next problem I see has to do with the book’s hook. Now, entire volumes have been published regarding this subject, so I’m not going to delve into it deeply. In fact, I really believe too much has been made of it, in that now writers are so sensitive to setting hooks that their books’ beginnings are often contrived. Settle down here. Yeah, your book needs a good hook, which is no more than a reason for me to keep reading. And yeah, I need a sense of where the book is heading and who the main folks are from the get go. But I don’t need a crash course in the characters’ histories, or an intricate foreknowledge of what’s to come. That produces the opposite effect of what you seek–turning off your reader with so much detail that he spits out your lure and swims back into the bookstore’s sea.

A hook can be nothing more than a quirky character about whom I want to know more (unless, of course, this is a Suspense Thriller!). Or a bizarre event that tweaks my interest. And yeah, it needs to come in early enough to catch my curiosity so I keep going. Rule of Thumb in Murder Mysteries is that the killing should occur on page one. If you can’t hook ‘em with some sort of unique slaying, you need to pick another genre in which to write. In all categories of Romance, my heart should stir in Chapter One. In Mainstream, I should find a character compelling enough to cause me to want more. And in Literary, the writing needs to take my breath–at least for moments, on page one.

My very favorite opening to any book goes thusly:

“In our family, there was no clear line between religion and fly fishing. We lived at the junction of the great trout rivers in western Montana, and our father was a Presbyterian minister and a fly fisherman who tied his own flies and taught others. He told us about Christ’s disciples being fishermen, and we were left to assume, as my brother and I did, that all first-class fishermen on the Sea of Galilee were fly fishermen and that John, the favorite, was a dry-fly fisherman.”

I would have followed that author to the ends of the Earth. And did.

Here as well is where you establish the Protagonist–the person with whom your reader is to travel the course of this novel. And, you must give a sense of his/her conflicts–even if the catalyst for the conflict (be it man or beast, internal or external, supernatural or drought) isn’t itself in evidence. The point of the conflict on the main character is the important thing, not the conflict itself. We have to move our hero out of his comfort zone–to begin the novel.

You must also firmly set the tone. If this is to be a Murder Mystery of some sort, someone gets killed straight out of the gate, thereby setting an ominous tone (if it’s well done). If the book’s a Literary one, the writing itself must effect the resonance that you seek.

On page one, we must find the Story Question, which we’ll talk about in the next installment of Structure. Because that Question will weave through each and every scene of your book.

Yep, a book’s beginning is tough to get right. But once you do, your reader has bought a ticket to ride your train–the first obstacle to overcome!

Later he has the students stand on his desk in order to look at the world in a different way. Inspired by Keating, the boys secretly revive a school literary club, the titular “Dead Poets Society,” to which Keating had belonged, meeting in a cave in the school grounds.

Charlie publishes an unauthorized article in the school newspaper, asserting that girls should be admitted to Welton.
