Savas Publishing & Consulting Group, Inc. (SPCG) has a fascinating history, one I believe our potential clients need to read and appreciate to understand fully our historical roots, who we are, our accomplishments, and how we operate.

The genesis of Savas Publishing & Consulting Group stretches back to a West Coast history conference in San Francisco in November 1990. A few months before the event, Theodore (Ted) P. Savas and David A Woodbury decided to produce a scholarly journal of articles for the conference to honor the speakers and topics of the weekend. Writers were located, desktop publishing skills were developed (no easy task in those days!), and what would turn out to be the first issue of an outstanding quarterly periodical, Civil War Regiments: A Journal of the American Civil War (CWR), made its debut.

Neither David nor Ted planned a career in publishing. At the time, David worked for The Sharper Image in San Francisco, and Ted was an attorney in Silicon Valley. But when the first issue of CWR became widely available, manuscript submissions poured in from across the country.

And Savas Woodbury Publishers was born--a small independent house determined to produce nothing but high quality original military and general history books for the discriminating reader.

After publishing and selling out several titles in a row, and placing several with the book clubs, the successful partnership secured national distribution into the general book trade through Stackpole Books, and international distribution with Greenhill Books of London. Ted and David worked tirelessly to produce many important and always original books.
